Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about USCIS records retrieval and Alien Files.
What is an Alien File (A-File) and what does it contain?
An A-File is the official physical or electronic file maintained by USCIS and the National Records Center documenting a person's complete immigration journey in the United States. It contains prior visa petitions (I-130, I-140, I-485), adjustment of status worksheets, asylum applications, removal or relief documents, officer interview notes, and border entry history.
Do I need an Alien Registration Number (A-Number) to apply?
No. An A-Number is not universally assigned (e.g. nonimmigrant visitors or short-term visa applicants often do not have one). If you do not have an A-Number, USCIS FOIA officers locate your records using your full legal name, date of birth, country of birth, and parents' names.
Is Form G-639 required to request USCIS records?
No. Under 6 C.F.R. § 5.21 and current USCIS regulations, Form G-639 is an optional paper channel. Electronic submissions accompanied by an unsworn declaration executed under penalty of perjury pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1746 satisfy statutory identity verification without requiring a notary or paper form.
