Frequently Asked Questions
Key insights into requesting records across different U.S. federal agencies.
What records can I retrieve from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)?
CBP maintains records of international entries and exits at U.S. ports of entry, electronic I-94 travel history records, border inspection notes, and secondary inspection/expedited removal records under 6 C.F.R. § 5.21 and 19 C.F.R. Part 103.
Can I obtain notes from a U.S. Embassy visa interview?
Yes. Under 22 C.F.R. Part 171 and INA § 222(f), the Department of State will release visa records and consular officer case notes to the visa applicant themselves. You must specify the exact U.S. Embassy or Consular Post where the application was submitted.
Why does EOIR require an Alien Registration Number?
The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) indexes Immigration Court Records of Proceeding (ROPs) exclusively by Alien Registration Number (A-Number). Requests without an A-Number cannot be located by the court clerk pursuant to 28 C.F.R. Part 16.
